Laura + Aldo's loving National Zoo + Adams Morgan engagement session

Flamingos and elephants and cats, oh my! Laura volunteers at the National Zoo, so as soon as she suggested that as an animal lover, it would be the perfect place for engagement photos, I knew we had to do it! Most of spring was incredibly wet and overcast, and the day of Laura + Aldo's session was no exception. We persevered, given the upcoming week's wet forecast, and when I got home to process the photos, I was so glad we did. Still, Laura and I were both dying for some glow-y sunset snaps, so we got together last week in Adams Morgan to take a stroll through a few of Laura + Aldo's favorite neighborhood places.  Keeping to the animal theme, we finished up with a few snap's of Laura's sweet kitty! This session is an animal lover's dream come true. :)

Tori + John's colorful National Building Museum engagement photos

Tori + Joe are incredibly fun, laid back, and ready for adventure. Since early spring weather is so unpredictable and the day was looking rainy, we decided on heading to the National Building Museum. Well, wouldn't you know, when we arrived, it was Family Discover Engineering Day at the museum. We found a few out-of-the-way nooks for photos -- and got the autograph of the astronaut who was there for the event!

Roseanna + Kevin's Church Hill engagement session | Richmond engagement photography

Two things happen in my head when a client wants to book me from afar to travel to their wedding. First, even after we've talked by phone and signed the contract, I have a small ball of TERROR that we won't be the right fit for each other. Second, I'm amazed, honored, and excited that these amazing people liked me and my work enough to book me without meeting me in person

Mandy + Kevin's CityCenter DC engagement

I am a huge fan of these two. I connected with Mandy + Kevin through a mutual acquaintance, and as they sat on the sofa in my living room and told me about how they came to be engaged, I just couldn't help but think to myself how intentional these two, and how much they've laid the groundwork for a lifelong partnership that will support them through thick and thin.  They'l be tying the knot at National Harbor later this year, but to celebrate their engagement and the new year, Mandy + Kevin wanted city lights. Thinking it through, we decided on two spots: the new CityCenterDC downtown, and the waterfront park in Georgetown, with killer views of the Rosslyn skyline.

Best of 2015: My favorite photos from the year

2015 was a pretty great year! I accomplished a lot, and grew SO MUCH as a photographer. It's really been a year of coming into my own! Looking back, I'm really proud to have accomplished some big things: I found + refined my signature style,  got my registrations sorted out as a small business owner, and made so many new friends (both clients + fellow wedding professionals)!

Cheerful National Building Museum + Gravelly Point engagement session | Jasmine + Graham

Jasmine is a ball of amazing energy and awesomeness. She's a super talented writer and blogger. In person, her laugh is infectious, and she's well spoken, poised, and gracious. The moment you meet her, you're like, "yep, Graham, you picked a good one." Graham is another of my urbanist-friends-turned-clients -- a huge transit advocate here in DC, and someone I've come to respect a great deal! When he told me he'd proposed to Jasmine and that they were hoping I could do some engagement photos for them, I was thrilled!

Sweet, moody autumn Georgetown canal engagement | Chelsea + Zack

She called me 20 minutes before our shoot was supposed to start. "Hi, Aimee? We're driving over from Arlington now... what's our rain plan? It's pouring here." Well, it was gray and almost raining in Georgetown on this overcast Monday, but we squeezed through on the weather -- just barely. I'll admit that I'm always a little sad on overcast days -- yes, the lighting is so consistent and easy, but it also means no chance of sunset photos! But in this case, between the gorgeous couple and the weather, I love, love LOVE the moody, romantic feel of this Georgetown session.

Old Town Alexandria autumn cobblestone engagement | Christine + Shawn | Northern Virginia wedding photography

Holy cow, it's engagement season, and holy cow I love that! Fall is one of my favorite times of year, and while between weddings, engagements, holidays, and my day job, it can get a little (ahem) crazy, I love being on location with a couple, because having a camera in my hand, I have to slow down, breathe, and be in the moment. And this is a moment I DEFINITELY wanted to be in. Between their adorable pup, a coffee break, Christine's killer red dress, and just the perfect light at the end of this session, I'm in love. Oh, and so are they, as if you couldn't tell from the photos!!

Dupont Circle + Bishops Garden engagement | Brigid + Cara

This beautiful Saturday, a chill was in the air, but even more... love was in the air! I was delighted this past spring when Brigid contacted me from Orange County to say that she and Cara (who's from the DC area) were getting married in DC next spring, and would I be their wedding photographer? Heck yes!!

Cara + Brigid took a "wedding planning" vacation, traveling to DC a few weeks ago, and we decided on two locations that both had meaning to these amazing women! Cara spent a lot of time with her family at the Bishop's Garden at Washington National Cathedral growing up, so we started there. The garden is quickly becoming one of my very favorite spots!

National Cathedral Bishop's Garden and Kennedy Center engagement | Darcy + Clark

Darcy + Clark are charming... so it only makes sense that we ended up at one of the most enchanting places in DC for their engagement session -- the Bishop's Garden at Washington National Cathedral. Darcy donned a darling newspaper-print dress from ModCloth, which was so perfect because she and Clark are newspaper enthusiasts ("we get three delivered to our apartment!", she says.) They also love to travel, which is just perfect, because I felt like we were in a Parisian garden or an Italian estate for so much of this session!

Fell's Point & Mt. Vernon Baltimore engagement session | Amy + Alan

You know when you meet someone, and they immediately put you at ease, and are the friendliest, most considerate people you could ever hope to meet? That's Amy + Alan! I drove up to their terrific Baltimore neighborhood, Mt. Vernon, on Labor Day, to meet them in person and capture their engagement session.

When I arrived on their doorstep, we immediately bonded over their awesome apartment building, then hopped in the car to head a few block over (I had a sprained ankle, or we totally could have walked it!) to the beautiful historic square that's one of their favorite spots. It's been under construction almost the entire time they've lived in Baltimore, and they joked that it finished just in time for their photos!

National Park Seminary and at-home engagement session | Megan + Drew

Quiet and warm. That's how I'd describe Megan and Drew. Megan's a bit of a photographer herself, and so when she reached out, I was excited to talk to her. Her attention to detail and her gentle enthusiasm came through clearly in her emails, and so I was so looking forward to meeting her and Drew in person. After their session, I think you'll agree that there's a lot to be excited for for their wedding day!

Downtown Annapolis engagement session | Marcelle + Ryan at State Circle

Marcelle is just about the sweetest person you'll ever meet. She instantly puts you at ease, and before you know it, you feel like you've been her best friend forever. Ryan's a little quieter at first, but you get the impression that he is absolutely Marcelle's rock, and that the two of them have no interest in being without each other!  We decided that a session in downtown Annapolis would be perfect for the two of them -- a more casual complement to their upcoming "glam camping" wedding in southern Maryland this fall. I think we succeeded! And best of all? A mid-session thunderstorm meant that these two got to finish their photos quite literally under the rainbow! I love everything about this too-great-for-words Annapolis engagement!

DC cherry blossom engagement: Cheri + Scott

Embracing early morning on the weekend can be a challenge. But to catch a few minutes of tranquility, we decided on a sunrise session at the Tidal Basin to document Cheri + Scott's engagement. They're tying the knot in just a few short weeks, and while the blossoms will be long gone by then, I hope every year the springtime will make them think back to this special morning!
