Virginia Wedding | The Mill at Fine Creek: Kate + Juan
Kate is a longtime, close friend of Kian's from college. She started dating Juan around the same time that I started dating Kian. I remember on one of my early dates with Kian at a storytelling show, Kate and Juan joined us. Juan was still trying to win Kate over, and Kian totally threw him under the bus when he brought ME flowers, and some for Kate too! Luckily, Juan had plenty of other chances to shine without Kate's friend bringing flowers to their dates.
We were so excited when Juan proposed and Kate said yes. They chose a very early spring day in March to tie the knot at the gorgeous, amazing Mill at Fine Creek in Powhatan, Virginia.
It had been such a freezing-cold late winter that even though it was mostly overcast, we were delighted that the last of the snow had melted and temperatures were warm enough to skip the overcoats outside!
Such a delicate, lovely vintage dress! Kate wore her mom's wedding dress, tailored in Colombia with the help of Juan’s mother and aunt, and updated to make it her own. So gorgeous and made even more special by the women involved in bringing it together!
Kate + Juan skipped the wedding party, but Kate spent the morning getting ready with her mom, sisters, and friend. It's been a weddingful few months for these ladies -- the last wedding we photographed before the holidays was that of Kate's little sister Kelly!
One of the things I love about the Mill at Fine Creek is that there's a whole separate cabin for the groom to use! I love that it's rustic but so polished at the same time.
Since the grounds were still a bit damp from all the recent snow, we headed up to the creek for the first look... and for portraits! Kate and I had quite a time "hiding" her behind my giant reflector to keep her out of sight getting from the house to the creek while guests were arriving.
How stunning is she in that dress and crushed velvet jacket? And I love how much Juan is channeling James Bond!
Kate + Juan met at their office, so it was only appropriate that to officiate the wedding, the turned to Rich Owens: their boss (and spiritual advisor)! And he didn't disappoint, helping them put together a ceremony that had us all laughing and crying.
How fun are these two?
Every single part of Kate + Juan's day had a family connection. All flowers and mason jar candles were arranged by Charlie, a dear friend of Kate's family who managed to get all three Bartram girls through their weddings.
Their Colombian wedding cake? It was made in Juan's neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia, then carried to the US by Juan's parents in a feat of engineering designed by Juan's dad! (Holy cow!) Once it arrived safely, Juan's parents and aunt did the decorating too. Since Kate's father was in military, family tradition dictated cutting the cake... with his sword!
At the very end of the night after everyone had left, we snuck back out to the Mill ruins in the rain for some late-night quiet moments. Love these two so much!
A gigantic thank you to the creative team who made such a perfect day possible!
