Stephanie + John's colorful autumn estate wedding | Ash Lawn-Highland in Charlottesville | Virginia wedding photography
Things I learned documenting this beautiful Charlottesville estate wedding at the home that once belonged to James Monroe: 1.) Do not ever doubt the energy, love, or capability of one Stephanie Remick, bride. She is awesome and her execution of her plans will be equally awesome, however unconventional on paper. 2.) Charlottesville is absolutely beautiful in November, and the golden light on the rolling hills is magnificent. 3.) Getting ready for your wedding day at adjoining AirBnBs is something that more couples should do, because you have so much more space than a hotel room with none of the clutter of being at home.
As my dear friend Katie and I were driving down to Charlottesville from DC early on Saturday morning, I couldn't help gush to her how much I loved the bride and groom, Stephanie and John. You see, Stephanie and John are runners who live in Arlington, and THEY ARE BOARD GAME NERDS LIKE ME. Which is awesome Stephanie is also a dynamic ball of energy, and did 99% of planning and brainstorming for the day herself. She + John really get my ethos of making your wedding a reflection of yourself, and Stephanie made two fearlessly-individual decisions about their wedding that some of us were originally skeptical about, but which turned out to be SO AMAZING on the big day!
As I pulled bridesmaid dresses from the closet of their AirBnB -- all four of Stephanie's bridesmaids were her sisters! -- I was surprised to see each was a VERY different deep jewel tone. I drew my breath as I saw this, and Stephanie's sisters giggled from the other room. "They're all different colors, we know! That's our Stephanie!" They confessed to thinking she was a little crazy in her choices looking at any dress individually... but then when we put all of the bridesmaids together, they looked like the most gorgeous autumn bouquet. especially with their bright gold sunflower bouquets, and their mom in a beautiful yellow chiffon dress!
Once Stephanie was ready, we had a little bit of time to kill before the rest of the bridal party was ready, so we went down to the lobby of the apartment building, to what I would've sworn was a gorgeous vintage high-end hotel! I absolutely loved the air arched entries and classic black and white tile.
Once everyone in the party was ready, they piled into a car to head over to Ash Lawn Highland, the venue!
Meanwhile, Katie, my second for the weekend, got to head to the back side of the building to another AirBnB apartment where John and the guys were getting ready. Katie reported that John was super-chill, and actually taking a cat nap when she arrived. Love that!
Ash Lawn Highland, which was James Monroe's estate, is a gorgeous plethora of quaint historic buildings, stately hedges, and these stunning rolling hills.
Awesome unique thing #2 of the day. Instead of some boring way of releasing guests to the buffet, Stephanie + John pitted their guests' tables against one another in a giant game of Stephanie-and-John trivia! Stephanie was never more in her element all day than when MCing trivia. If you ever need a game show host for your new TV game show, call Stephanie.
kudos and thanks to the event team who brought this day to life
