Jefferson Hotel Wedding in Richmond, VA: Kat + Ryan
Kat + Ryan tied the knot on a perfect spring day in April. The bride and groom, college friends of Kian's, asked us to photograph the event, because in Kat's words, "you two are the only ones who have ever been able to take a good picture of me". High praise indeed, and we were happy to take on their day.
While the couple lives in Alexandria, Virginia, they chose the inimitable Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond for the festivities. The grande dame of Richmond hotels, it provided the perfect backdrop for a glamourous celebration.
Kat and Ryan met while they were students at George Mason University, and courted through several of Ryan's deployments to Afghanistan as a member of the Marine Corps, and then later while both were working on and around Capitol Hill. Kat tells a sweet story of a mutual friend encouraging their early interest over Skype, helping each of them be a little more forward in their interest than either might otherwise have been with Ryan half a world away. Thanks to that friend for precipitating an eventual perfect match!
The black tie nuptials were quite the affair, with gowns, tuxedos, and Marines in dress uniform over a backdrop of the hotel that inspired much of Gone With the Wind, including the film's famous staircase.
The entire day and night alike were a delight, both as a guest and as a photographer. The stunning reception lighting was the work of Blue Steel Lighting, Ashton Hassan was our lovely liaison at the historic Jefferson Hotel, and I had the pleasure of working side by side with my favorite co-photographer, Kian McKellar. Bride's hair and makeup by Salon Del Sol.
